About the Event

Meet us at Carson Community Center at 8:30am near the LA Public Chinatown Library on the corner of Ord St. and N. Hill St E. Carson St.

Upon arrival, SEACA staff will check-in folks and have guardians sign youth waivers. We will then board a bus and cruise through our California Coast to visit Malibu Lagoon State Beach, which will take about 1 hour and 15 minutes (traffic pending). The bus will drop us off at the Malibu shopping center right in front of the 534 Metro stop, where we will then stroll to Malibu Lagoon State Beach. Our stroll to Malibu Lagoon will consist of walking on concrete. During our walk to the site, we ask folks to be alert when crossing street lights and stay close to the group because we will be strolling through a populated shopping center and the heavily trafficked Pacific Coast Highway. We are asking guardians to share this information with the youth in preparation for our visit.

Once we get to Malibu Lagoon, we will start with an ice breaker led by Program Coordinator Kya Marina-Le and join in on a program led by Program Coordinator Zee Zetino, where we will learn the history about the space—why Malibu Lagoon is an vital place for humans, plants, and animals—and practice keen observation with a fun Loteria game. Our stroll along Malibu Lagoon will consist of a concrete and dirt path, and eventualy stepping off a woodplank to get on the sand. If low tides allow, we might be able to explore the tide pools of Malibu Lagoon State Beach. Please note rocks in the tidepool area will be slippery, so in order to have a joyful experience, we recommend bringing shoes that are comfortable and okay to get wet. We will proceed with lunch. After lunch, CNC staff will lead a rope course activity at the beach! Come ready to get active!

We expect Malibu Lagoon to be mostly cloudy with a couple of showers at 64° (subject to change), so please layer up with thin layers that can easily be added or removed (think of layers like an onion)! We will spend 8:30am-5:10pm

(8.16 hours) together so make sure to bring enough water, backpack to carry your belongings, a blanket/towel to sit on, and curiosity for the ocean. Please make sure to arrive at LA Public Chinatown Library on time (5-10 mins early) because the bus will not be able to wait and we need to follow our schedule accordingly.

When registering for this event, make sure to add your correct email and phone number, so that you can receive more details of what to expect on our trip and any recent program changes.

Reminders: We will be strolling to Malibu Lagoon State Beach after being dropped off at the Malibu shopping center, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes. If the tide pools are low, keep in mind that your shoes might get wet and sandy. We are expecting the day to be mostly sunny, so bring proper attire and/or products to protect your skin from the sun. Although we are visiting the beach, CNC staff will not take responsibility for anyone swimming in the water. There will be a lifeguard on duty, so you can access the water/swim at your own discretion and comfortability. With that being said, we do want to share that there are recent warnings at Malibu Lagoon about toxic waste/bacteria harmful to humans present in the water. We suggest only getting your feet wet if you feel comfortable. Be prepared to be/walk around sand for most of our time at Malibu Lagoon State Beach.

If you need any accommodations to make your trip as comfortable as possible or need to communicate anything to CNC staff to ensure a pleasurable experience in our Transit to Trails, please reach out to our Program Coordinator Zee Zetino, zee@communitynatureconnection.org AND ttt@communitynatureconnection.org
